From feathery fringe to majestic locks, the hairstyles in Blowout 2012 utilized more than bobby pins and ponytails to wow judges. This year’s event is expected to be nothing short of hair-raising.

“I was blown away by the talent and creativity last year … the winner’s hair was on fire!” Associate Development Director for the Q Center (a non-profit safe space in Syracuse for LGBTQ youth, their allies, and parents) Moe Harrington O’Neill said. “I can only imagine what will walk down the runway this year.”

AIDS Community Resources will host Blowout 2013: April Showers Bring May Flowers from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 19 at the Landmark Theatre. Competing salons thus far are Artistry in Hanover, Fringe, Marny and Co., Evolve, and the reigning Blowout Champion, C.W. Gorgeous. The top prize winner will receive the Blowout trophy for one year and an ad in Today’s CNY Woman magazine.

Vendors for the event will be Sweet Jimmy’s Cookies, Witty Wicks Candles, Showoffs, It Works Body with Leslie Michel, and sponsors include Paparazzi Day Spa, Landmark Theatre, and Continental Beauty School. Live entertainment will be provided by Envisions, a youth duo.

“These businesses are incredibly community focused,” Harrington O’Neill said. “Everyone from the owners who get to showcase their creative staff, the staff who work together for those bragging rights, to the clients who come out, support their salon to have a great time and raise some money for a great local cause.”

Last year, the fantasy hair show attracted more than 200 captivated audience members and raised more than $2,500 for ACR. This year’s event will once again benefit the Q Center.

“[Blowout] is a great team-building event. It promotes local businesses, brings some new sponsors to the table for us as an agency, and helps us raise unrestricted funding for our youth center,” she said. “The level of industry talent and professionalism in Syracuse is overwhelming.”

Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased by calling the Landmark box office at 475-7979 or ACR office at 475-2430. For more information on ACR, visit www.aidscommunityresources.com.
