One of the most incredible gifts we experience as a woman is being a mother. There’s even a special day set aside to honor moms. But who is the mother of Mother’s Day?
That would be Anna Jarvis, founder of the holiday. Her mother, Ann Jarvis, founded Mother’s Day Work Clubs to improve sanitary and health conditions and helped both Union and Confederate soldiers. On May 12, 1907, two years after Ann Jarvis’ death, Anna held a memorial to her mother and thereafter embarked upon a campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a holiday. She succeeded in 1914.
By the 1920s, Anna had become soured by the commercialization of the holiday. According to her New York Times obituary, Jarvis became embittered because too many people sent their mothers a printed greeting card. As she said,
“A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world …”
— Anna Jarvis
Well, don’t worry Anna, this year our readers can give their moms the state’s No. 1 award-winning magazine … CNY Woman is now offering home delivery. See page 32.
And, as the mother of Today’s CNY Woman, I’d also like to announce we are now a national award-winning magazine as well!
CNY Woman placed third in the country in the 2012 Association of Free Community Papers (AFCP) winning in the General Excellence, glossy stock category. More than 1,500 entries in 67 different categories were submitted for judging.
We are honored and want to say thank you to our readers and Happy Mother’s Day to all.
